The cold night air and the brisk pace he'd set served to release some of the pulsing tension within him. Chris glanced around to discover that he'd left the flashing lights far behind. Dark, empty storefronts and equally empty parking lots lined the edges of the highway. In a few hours this area would be a beehive of activity, but right now it slept the sleep of the "closed at five." The residential neighborhoods he could just make out in the distance rested undisturbed, as well. |

Chris stood at the top of a long highway, in the midst of the true darkness that lived away from the artificial world near the freeway. He turned and looked back at the other worldthe world where D.J. lived. In a way she reminded Chris of those lights blinking and shimmering below him: hard and bright and so beautiful she hurt his eyes to look at her for long.
